The "Centennial Edition" of Riptide magazine was published in 1850 - in two installments, containing many historical biographies. No one claimed authorship at the time, and it's still not clear who the writer(s) was/were (the pen name "Aunt Mathilda" is given), but much of the information was drawn from previous published sources. Pdf versions of individual photographed pages are accessible online in the MAH online archives. There's also an alphabetical biography index, in Excel spreadsheet format. Be aware, however, that some text is cut off because of page misalignment during photography. All Riptide issues are available on microfilm at SCPL.
The "Centennial Edition" of Riptide magazine was published in 1950 - in several installments, containing many historical biographies of "pioneers" who came to California prior to statehood, and had at least some connection to the original Santa Cruz County (which extended further up the coast past Pescadero). No one claimed authorship at the time, and it's still not clear who the writer(s) was/were (the pen name "Aunt Mathilda" was used). Sources for pre-statehood information are not always given.

Several not-very-local persons have biographies in the Riptide Centennial:
Local researcher Robert Nelson created pdf versions of individual photographed pages, which were, until November 2025, accessible online in the MAH online archives. Hopefully, "pending" means that the poor-quality page photos will soon be replaced with scanned images. There's also an alphabetical biography index, in Excel spreadsheet format. Page numbers used here are from the online index (e.g. CE2). Be aware, however, that some text is cut off because of page misalignment during photography.
* Delos R. Ashley was a 49er who lived and practiced law in Monterey in the 1850s. He was a US congressman from the district that included Santa Cruz County, and was a silent partner in the early days of the Pacific Sentinel newspaper, before it moved to Santa Cruz.
* John C. Fremont had a large presence in pre-statehood California, but his influence in our area was limited to one or two recruiting visits to Zayante in 1845-46.
* William T. Sherman was financially involved with some Pajaro Valley banking business in the 1850s, while stationed in Monterey with the US occupation forces, but was never a resident.
* Daniel and James Blackburn, younger brothers of William, stayed in Santa Cruz County for a few years in the early 1850s before moving south to San Luis Obispo County.

Persons listed in Riptide with only minimal/incomplete/doubtful info, and/or having entries that are not readable in the online version because parts of pages are cut off:
Nelson's pdfs also include images of 15 clippings from Riptide magazine issues published after the Centennial Edition, from 10-26-50 to 01-09-51.

All Riptide issues are available on microfilm at SCPL. Individual issues contain biographies in addition to those found in the Centennial Edition.

Several state-prominent but not-very-local persons have biographies in the Riptide Centennial:
Baker, Isaac Munroe
* Delos R. Ashley was a 49er who lived and practiced law in Monterey in the 1850s. He was a US congressman from the district that included Santa Cruz County, and was a silent partner in the early days of the Pacific Sentinel newspaper, before it moved to Santa Cruz.
Baker, J
* Faxon D. Atherton (CE25 1815-1877), for whom the town of Atherton was named in 1923.
Baker, John
* John C. Fremont had a large presence in pre-statehood California, but his influence in our area was limited to one or two recruiting visits to Zayante in 1845-46.
Baptiste, Jean
* Jesse D. Carr (1814-1903, Colma - CE2, with photo) acquired part of Rancho Salsipuedes for a few years in the early 1850s, but became prominent and died in Salinas. (Note: Carr is not named in lists of rancho investors included in Harrison and Martin, but neither do those two lists agree with each other).
Barham, James F.
* Samuel J. Hensley 1817-1866 (CE13) was a prominent figure in pre-gold-rush overland immigration to California, but had minimal connection to this area.
Barton, John R
* John Parrott (CPL12, 1811-1884) was prominent in San Francisco and Butte County, and was a prominent investor in the California Powder Company, but had little direct presence in Santa Cruz County.
Barton, William
*James Frazier Reed (CPL13) spent a couple of seasons prospecting for gold near Felton, but lived in San Jose. See "The Gold Gulch Letters of James Frazier Reed", by Margaret R. Koch, in Santa Cruz County History Journal Number 2. Reed's daughter Martha Lewis moved to our area. Martha's son Frazier Lewis became a confectioner in Capitola and Santa Cruz.
Bassett, Vincente
* William Tecumseh Sherman (who later became the famous Civil War general) was financially involved with some Pajaro Valley banking business in the 1850s, while stationed in Monterey with the US occupation forces, but was probably never a resident. Martin wrote that Sherman was one of a group of investors who bought former Rancho Salsipuedes land, but this is unconfirmed by other sources. (See also White, Edward).
Baxter, Henry Vanderbeck
* George Stoneman (CPL7), CA governor 1883-1887. The profile states that he was "one of the men engaged in setting out the town of Sta Cruz" (presumably while garrisoned at Monterey in 1849), but gives no other names and provides no sourcing. It's possible he was associated with Stevenson, Jonathan D.

 • Delos R. Ashley was a 49er who lived and practiced law in Monterey in the 1850s. He was a US congressman from the district that included Santa Cruz County, and was a silent partner in the early days of the Pacific Sentinel newspaper, before it moved to Santa Cruz.
 • Faxon D. Atherton (CE25 1815-1877), for whom the town of Atherton was named in 1923.
 • John C. Fremont had a large presence in pre-statehood California, but his influence in our area was limited to one or two recruiting visits to Zayante in 1845-46.
 • Jesse D.
 • Samuel J. Hensley 1817-1866 (CE13) was a prominent figure in pre-gold-rush overland immigration to California, but had minimal connection to this area.
 • John Parrott (CPL12, 1811-1884) was prominent in San Francisco and Butte County, and was a prominent investor in the California Powder Company, but had little direct presence in Santa Cruz County.
 • James Frazier Reed (CPL13) spent a couple of seasons prospecting for gold near Felton, but lived in San Jose.
 • William Tecumseh Sherman (who later became the famous Civil War general) was financially involved with some Pajaro Valley banking business in the 1850s, while stationed in Monterey with the US occupation forces, but was probably never a resident. Martin wrote that Sherman was one of a group of investors who bought former Rancho Salsipuedes land, but this is unconfirmed by other sources. (See also White, Edward).
 • George Stoneman (CPL7), CA governor 1883-1887. The profile states that he was "one of the men engaged in setting out the town of Sta Cruz" (presumably while garrisoned at Monterey in 1849), but gives no other names and provides no sourcing. It's possible he was associated with Stevenson, Jonathan D.
