Benjamin A. [Allen] Case (1798-1871), described by Rowland as a "Connecticut Yankee", came to Santa Cruz in 1847 or '48. A subdivision map produced by Elihu Anthony in 1848 showed Case as owner of a neighboring triangular parcel whose borders defined today's Pacific Avenue, Front Street (created by Anthony), and Cooper Street in downtown Santa Cruz. Wife Mary (1800-1889) is credited with being the first Santa Cruz school teacher. In 1866, the Case family lived in a house on a large parcel on the west side of Neary Lagoon but, according to Rowland, lost their wealth in an 1869 Los Angeles hotel investment. Case died in Mendocino County two years later, and Mary returned to Santa Cruz, where she lived with son Rollin until her death in 1889.

Rollin Case (1843-1908) was a Soc. of Pioneers member, and is also buried at Evergreen.
