The westernmost area of the City of Santa Cruz is known, unsurprisingly, as the Westside. It sits on two gently sloping marine terraces, separated by the east-west line of escalona (stairstep) bluffs, and is bounded geographically by Monterey Bay on the south, Moore Creek (the city limits) on the west, UCSC on the north, and the bluffs on the east that drop down to the San Lorenzo river floodplain. However, Mission Hill - a peninsula of the lower terrace where Mission Santa Cruz was located - is usually regarded as a separate neighborhood. The main roads of the Westside are Mission Street, Delaware Avenue, and Bay Street. Several smaller neighborhood names are commonly used within the Westside area.
