Land for a Catholic cemetery was purchased from [[Hihn, Frederick A.|F. A. Hihn]] in 1868 by the Diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles. Holy Cross Cemetery was consecrated in 1873. Beginning in 1885, burials at Mission Santa Cruz were transferred to the new cemetery, in preparation for removal of the original adobe mission chapel and construction of today's [[Holy Cross church]]. A second [[Holy Cross Cemetery]] opened not far away in 1943.

Beginning in 1885, burials at Mission Santa Cruz were transferred to the new cemetery, in preparation for removal of the original adobe mission chapel and construction of today's Holy Cross church. A second Holy Cross Cemetery opened not far away in 1943.
