Soquel Avenue is part of the old Watsonville Road, based on the route laid out by the 1769 expedition led by Portolá, the first Europeans to see what is now Santa Cruz County. From its western terminus at Pacific Avenue, Soquel Avenue crosses the San Lorenzo River and continues to the east. Where it crosses Highway 1, it is renamed Soquel Drive. Soquel Drive dead ends past Freedom Boulevard.
