Bowman, Gustavus
Gustavus Bowman (1832-1912), was a Santa Cruz hardware merchant, and served as mayor in 1888-92. He had a large home built for his daughter on Third Street in 1885, which was replaced in 1936 by the current residence. Older brother (or uncle?) John Bowman (1805-1853) was a hardware merchant and tinsmith in Soquel. Brother Edward acquired the Foster & Lake carriage-maker business on Front Street, changing the name to "Santa Cruz Carriage Works" in ~1884 (first "'Sentinel ad found).
According to the Find-a-Grave page, the Bowman parents emigrated from Germany to Ohio, where the sons were born, and changed the name spelling from Bauman to Bowman. Daughter Eva Bowman married H. R. Judah, Jr., a future senator.
