Benjamin A. [Allen] Case (1798-1871), described by Rowland as a "Connecticut Yankee", came to Santa Cruz in 1848. The US Coast Survey of 1853 showed Case as owner of the triangular parcel now bordered by Pacific Avenue, Front Street, and Cooper Street in downtown Santa Cruz. Wife Mary (1800-1889) is credited with being the first Santa Cruz school teacher. In 1866, the Case family lived in a house on a large parcel on the west side of Neary Lagoon but, according to Rowland, lost their wealth in an 1869 Los Angeles hotel investment. Case died in Mendocino County two years later, and Mary returned to Santa Cruz, where she lived with son Rollin until her death in 1889.

Rollin Case (1843-1908) was a Soc. of Pioneers member, and is also buried at Evergreen Cem.
