Woods Lagoon was the name of a natural lagoon at the mouth of Arana Gulch, named for adjacent landowner John Woods (1818-1887). In the 1960s, the lagoon was dredged and expanded to create the Santa Cruz Harbor. Also emptying into the former lagoon is Hagemann Gulch, which forms the western border of the city-owned Arana Gulch Open Space.
