Arana Gulch and the creek of the same name, form part of the eastern boundary of the City of Santa Cruz, emptying into Monterey Bay at Santa Cruz Harbor (Woods Lagoon until the 1960s). Named for the Californio Jose Arana, grantee of Rancho Potrero y Rincon de San Pedro Regalado. Arana later moved east a few miles, near the creek that now bears his name. The land that is now the Arana Gulch Open Space was once a ranch owned by Frederick Hagemann.

The Arana Gulch Open Space opened officially with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 14, 2015. The project included a new pedestrian/bike bridge across steep-sided Hagemann Gulch (the western border of the Open Space) to allow access from Santa Cruz via Broadway.
