Frederick Rudolph "Fred" Walti (1861-1940) is described in Martin as born in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, coming to Santa Cruz in 1884, where Martin says he first bought the Vienna Brewery, operated in for a time, then sold it to the Bausch Brewery (see the Bausch page for more explanation).

Walti and a partner eventually established the Santa Cruz Brewery and Ice Company (location not specified).
