Lawrence Lorenzen (1854-1919, Colma) is described in Guinn as coming to California at age 2 with his German parents, but the Find-a-Grave pages say he and his parents were born in Denmark, in the Schleswig-Holstein region. Both may be correct: Schleswig-Holstein is part of Germany today, but in the 19th-century was contested between Germany and Denmark.
Father Lorenz Lorenzen owned a shipyard in Davenport from the mid-1850s, but Lawrence became manager (wharfinger) of the Cowell wharf, and later (presumably after the wharf washed away in 1907) moved to San Francisco to work for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company.
