Kooser, Benjamin P.
Benjamin Park Kooser (1822-1878), a native of Pennsylvania, came to California as a member of the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers, a unit formed to served in the Mexican-American War. After mustering out, he stayed in California, and came to Santa Cruz in 1865, where he bought a share of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He was co-owner with Duncan McPherson for 11 years.
- Mexican-American War service in the New York Volunteers regiment is documented in an 1874 book titled "Roll of the Survivors"; viewable online at Internet Archive. The list of names in the book, which appears to be incomplete, does not include Kooser.
