Francis Rabel (1824-1870) bought an established tannery just up Soquel Creek from Soquel village in 1866, from owners Edward Briody and Titus Hale. Rabel came to Soquel in 1865, after his tannery in Sacramento was destroyed by flooding. [Thanks to Jay Topping for sharing the obituary clipping].
