The St. Charles Hotel, which opened in 1873, was the first downtown Santa Cruz hotel on Mission Street. Earlier hotels had been on Main (now Front) Street. The hotel was created by adding a third story under a Second Empire-style mansard roof to an 1867 building owned by William Anthony, with the financial assistance of Charles Brown. Later called the Waverly Hotel, the building burned down in 1919.
