Cowell wharf

The Cowell wharf (or "Cowell's wharf") existed in various forms and under various names from 1849 to the last night of 1907, when it was destroyed by a storm and never rebuilt. The first wharf at the end of today's Bay Street was built by Elihu Anthony in 1849. Limemakers Davis & Jordan bought the wharf in 1854, rebuilding/lengthening it in 1856. Henry Cowell became sole owner of the lime company and its wharf in 1889. The photograph at right is a detail from the 1906 Lawrence aerial photo.
