Alvin Rand Meserve (1833-1912), born in Maine, came to Santa Cruz in the 1850s. By 1864, he and a partner named Jordan had opened a general store. In 1870 he was elected to be one of the 3 town trustees, and in 1872 he became county treasurer after Samuel W. Blakely resigned. The family later moved to Long Beach, CA.

According to Rowland (p.191), Meserve led a subscription campaign in 1864 to build a footbridge at the Cooper Street Ford.
