Four Williams brothers came to California in 1843. Isaac (1822-1870), James (1813-1858), and Squire came to Santa Cruz County as early as 1845. There's no record that the fourth brother John, who died in 1849, ever came here. The brothers bought land near Davenport, establishing lumbering operations.

The brothers also acquired a large parcel in what became the Town of Santa Cruz in 1866. The map detail shown at right names the parcel owners as "Heirs of James Williams", but Isaac may have lived there at some point. A 1919 article quoted in Sidewalk companion claimed that Isaac Williams planted an orchard there. James died in 1858, and it appears that Isaac may have left the area before 1866. He died in 1870 in Santa Ana, CA (Orange County).
