Gustavus Bowman (1832-1912), born in the Netherlands, was a Santa Cruz hardware merchant, and served as mayor in 1888-92. He had a large home built on Third Street in 1885, which was replaced in 1936 by the current residence. According to Rowland, brother John Bowman was a tinsmith. John was also a Society of Pioneers member.
