Charles Smith (1839-1919) is described in Martin as born in New York state, coming to the Pajaro Valley in the 1860s, where he at first rented farmland, including from "Judge Peckham" (Robert F. Peckham). Peckham subdivided his farm and sold 42 acres to Smith. Smith further subdivided and sold off his land, then bought another, larger parcel.
