"Sugar King" Claus Spreckels once owned much of today's Aptos and Rio del Mar, and partnered with F. A, Hihn to build the Santa Cruz Railroad (SCR) in 1874-76. His sugar company built the Western Beet Sugar Company refinery in Watsonville in 1888.
