Robert Shaw Tait (1863-1955), a son of James A. Tait, became head of both the Santa Cruz Water Dept. and Fire Dept. in the early 20th century. He oversaw an expansion of the city water system, including what are still known as the "Tait Wells".

Father James was a Soc. of Pioneers member, along with sons Joseph, Robert, and William.
