Henry Mel and his wife Nellie established the Villa Fontenay winery at a Vine Hill-area vineyard they bought from the Jarvis family in 1879. A Santa Cruz bank foreclosed on the Villa Fontenay estate in 1895.

In 1977, comedian Dick Smothers reopened the vineyard and winery.

A privately-owned vineyard still exists there.
