Benjamin Park Kooser (1822-1878), a native of Pennsylvania, came to California as a member of the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers, a unit formed to served in the Mexican-American War. After mustering out, he stayed in California, and came to Santa Cruz in 1865, where he bought a share of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He was co-owner with Duncan McPherson for 11 years.
