Richard Thompson (d.1906) is described in Guinn as born 1840 in NYC, coming at age 8 to San Francisco by sea in 1849 with an uncle named "Capt.Joseph Galloway" (no explanation given for the title). He came to Santa Cruz to accept a position as agent for the Wells Fargo Express Company. A brief newspaper notice from shortly before his death (posted to the Find-a-Grave page) states that he had been the Wells Fargo agent "for the past 30 years". If that's accurate, his arrival in Santa Cruz would have been in 1876.
