Thomas M. Gatch (no local burial found) came to Santa Cruz in 1857, opening the school that became Mission Hill School, on a parcel that had been owned in 1850 by his father-in-law Silas Bennett. Gatch left Santa Cruz after seven-and-a-half months to take a faculty position at the University of the Pacific in Santa Clara.
