Reuben Bernheim (1828-1894), a merchant by trade, was a native of Germany. He and his brother Jacob (1833-1924 Colma) came to Santa Cruz from San Francisco in 1863, and went into the retail clothing business (J. Bernheim & Co.), joined by a third brother, Carl (1858-1915). Carl has a separate bio in Harrison. In 1861, Reuben married the former Julia Schwab, whose family (father-Moses) also moved to Santa Cruz (at the same time?).
