The Cowell wharf (or "Cowell's wharf") existed in various forms and under various names from 1849 to the last night of 1907. The first wharf at the end of today's Bay Street was built by Elihu Anthony in 1849. Limemakers Davis & Jordan bought the wharf in 1854, rebuilding/lengthening it in 1856. Henry Cowell became sole owner of the lime company and its wharf in 1889. The photograph at right is a detail from the 1906 Lawrence aerial photo.
