There have been many road name changes in Santa Cruz County history. Many roads received official names for the first time in 1866, with publication of the “Map of the Town of Santa Cruz” (Santa Cruz Sentinel, Jun 23, 1866, 2:4). An incomplete list of other changes:

  • Arcan Street - named for Arcan, John B. The 1866 map showed the name Bridge Street on one block from Pacific to Front, while showing no name on the continuing block. The 2 blocks are now part of Soquel Avenue (west of the river/bridge). East of the bridge, a short section (how long?) of Soquel was once Minnesota.
  • Garfield became Woodrow, along with a number of other changes, in 1921. No complete list (or ordinance public notice) found so far.
  • Cliff became West Cliff in 1946. Another westside Cliff Street was changed to ? in?
  • Many other changes by Ordinance 1781 in 1946 (see Sentinel May 5, 8:5) River, Potrero (the northern half is now Evergreen), High, Water, Mission, Union, Green, Cross, and Rincon.
  • Extension/completion of Cedar (Vine), Center, and Chestnut streets in the 1960s.
