Members of the Brownstone family (no local burial sites found) came to Santa Cruz in the 1850s, or possibly earlier, getting into mercantile pursuits. Sidewalk Companion indexer Stan Stevens found first names for three brothers: David, Isaac, and Jacob. One or more of the brothers partnered with (presumably) Louis Schwartz in the 1850s as Schwartz & Brownstone. Newspapers as far away as Sacramento and Salt Lake City noted the destruction of the Schwartz & Brownstone Santa Cruz store and warehouse in an 1857 fire (precise location not included).

There is later reference to a "Brownstone building" that was demolished in 1928 to make way for Hotel Palomar on Pacific Avenue.
