The Whites built a house, raised a family, and stayed put. In 1881, White wrote a book titled "A Picture of Pioneer Times in California", under the pseudonym "William Grey". A digitized version is available online at HathiTrust. There's nothing in the book about White's real name, family, or Pajaro Valley home, none of which he apparently wanted to publicize (if it's indeed the same person).
