James King (no local burial found) came to Santa Cruz County in the 1850s, and was listed as owner of a downtown Santa Cruz residence in the 1866 town survey. The clipping at right shows that the King residence was in "Block No. 4" of the town map. The map shows the parcel on the north side of Locust Street, across from the large parcel where F. A. Hihn built his 1872 mansion, and where the Santa Cruz City Hall annex is today.

This may be the man for whom King Street was named, but evidence has not yet been found for this wiki. The name "King Street" appears on the 1866 map, but none of the properties on that street (only 1 block long at that time) were owned by anyone named King, and James King does not appear as a property owner anywhere else on the map.
