Mission Street is the main Santa Cruz street through the Westside neighborhood. It's original purpose was to connect Mission Santa Cruz to the "coast road" (now Highway 1) created by the 1769 Portola expedition. On its eastern end Mission Street continues east as Water Street, from in front of the Town Clock, the hub of downtown Santa Cruz.
