The little park was named for an organization called SCOPE (Santa Cruz Organization for Progress and Euthenics). The group started in 1963, continuing into the 2000s. The park became informally known as Scribner Park after a statue of local activist/musical saw player [[Scribner, Tom\|Tom Scribner]] was placed there in 1978. The statue was later moved to Pacific Avenue near Locust Street, where it remains today.
